We've had two home births and three natural pregnancies so far. Feel free to ask ANY questions about birth, babies, natural prenatal care and post part. Disclaimer: I AM NOT a doctor, just a mom who can speak from experience. I will gladly share what has worked for our family, as I'm sure other moms will as well. This is a forum, and while we all share a wealth of info, it is WISE to consult your physician with any concerns you may have.

That's awesome, amirinyahya! I haven't had any children yet; however, I'm definitely interested in having a home birth. Would you recommend having a home birth for your first time around? Also, did you have a doula? If so, how'd that go?

Hi sis! Hotpocket If you're in the right frame of mind - pretty much just not run by your fears - I'd definitely recommend a homebirth even for your first child. It allows you to be comfortable and give birth undisturbed. Hospitals definitely have their place but it's been proven that homebirth is safer for low risk pregnancies. We didn't have a doula either time but I'll be taking doula training in October because it's so reassuring to have another woman there for support. Our first HB was unassisted - just us and our oldest son (2 at the time) - it went well. Our second was under some crazy circumstances so I ended up calling a midwife friend to attend at the very last minute. It was awesome having a sister friend to support us even though we knew we could do it alone.

Wow, wow, wow, Mrs. Superhero. Alone, unassisted?? I'm amazed lol. That's definitely encouraging.
That's awesome that your going to train. We need definitely need SISTERS we can trust and feel comfortable with.
About prenatal care, did you follow a holistic pediatrician or natural prenatal care or did you have a typical pediatrician?

@hotpocket I did my own prenatal care. only because I'm very in tune with what's going on in my body and I know my herbs. Girl, I'm NO superwoman. Birth is natural LOL! The women giving birth on mud floors and in fields are superwomen! I had air conditioning and hot running water. I was cool! Of course it's not a walk in the park but it's certainly not all that the media makes it out to be.

That is beautiful. I am now 31 weeks with my second child. I am birthing in the hospital setting but I was interested in doing a home birth. I am in awe that you had no assistance it amazes me how strong we wombman are...and you esp learn this when we give another being that opportunity of new life! Good luck on your doula journey queen!

Omg. I applaud you. I wanted to do a water birth but in the hospital. Huge mistake! They were trying to get us in and out. They gave me pitocin without telling me and they were trying to pull my cervix down to accelerate the process which was extremely painful. So then I was coersed into getting an epidural and I couldnt have my water birth. I'll never go to the hospital again to deliver. I will do home births. Me and my best friend are in school to be midwives so I'll have her there for me. She coached me through this birth. That way i can use gravity to give birth like every other normal country but America. How do you get so in touch with your body so that you did your own prenatal care? That's amazing.

My first pregnancy was high risk and ended up being induced due to iUGR. I am hoping I will be able to have a home birth, if not a home birth than a natural birth in a birth center will be okay. I am also a birth and postpartum doula. I am working on my certification through birth arts international

Ladies you are so inspiring.
I am from South Africa and even though I don't have a child I have seen my friends go through the hospital system and literally being feared into having certain procedures done because they were told their babies are at risk. Growing spiritually and trying to live a natural holistic life its so scary to think more woman are not being taught to trust their bodies we put our lives in the hands of other people.
I want to have a natural water birth for my first child.
I love the idea of midwife/doula training it sounds so interesting I should research if they have training here.

I have this growing interest in becoming a midwife as well. Especially since I learned that there are not many melinated midwives or doulas out there. It would be starting from scratch for me.

That's awesome konsciousMind definitely visit SistaMidwife.com she was my midwife for my last birth and one of the only black midwives promoting natural and holistic birth options in our community. suwayba there are SOME cases when intervention is necessary, but you're right, most times it's not and usually it's a scare tactic. I'd say though, don't be afraid. Fear has a way of creating what we don't want. Just give thanks that the knowledge is out there and we're able to share with each other.

11goddessbri11 I was induced early in my first pregnancy too. It was a hard thing to go through so I totally understand. I think it's great that you're helping other women have more comfortable births despite what you've been through. I'm sure you're learning to listen to your body and get in tune so that you're able to have a better birth next time. Have you read Birthing From Within?

Hi amontg94 that's really hard to read girl! Birth should be so sacred and it's just gotten so EXTRA here in the west! I take time to meditate and especially during my cycles I take time to tune in to what I'm feeling so that I know what's what. I do a lot of herbal healing, and just plain old paying attention to what I feel and what I'm thinking, eating, etc. it really helps me Stay in touch and take care Of myself and my family without all the extra stuff.

HI! I'm 33 weeks pregnant. I'm currently staying with my parents and they are not very supportive of me wanting a home birth. So, I will end up delivering in a hospital :/. Luckily, I will have a doula there to assist me for my emotional needs. I have a midwife, but she is more medically-based than traditional. I will say that I have kept myself pretty busy and healthy throughout my pregnancy. I know for sure in the very distant future that I will have a home birth or as I joke in the woods under the moonlight. lol
