What keeps us depending on this mixed society? There was a time when we were forced to have our own communities and we were very successful with them. Why can't we go back to that or do we really just not want to? I think it is a discussion worth having. I see it as a way of building unity, protecting each other, and circulating the dollar in our own communities. What do you think? I've written a book about the subject and I'm releasing it in 3 parts for FREE! Feel free to check out part one on my site, www.h2obadiah.com. And let's have a discussion. It may be time to do things differently than we have been.

it's definitely levels to that one. but the major factor is DEPRESSION imo it manifests in many ways : lack of confidence that we CAN build something of our own which leads to hopelessness....and of course hopelessness starts to look like LAZINESS to the motivated and driven among us.
Our oppression has convinced alot of us that 1.) we're incapable of building anything meaningful on our own and 2.) Even if we try "they'll" tear it down...
But there's a small but STRONG faction within us that's willing to do the WORK. We gotta focus on that faction and build for the ones who can't see it yet. This site is a part of that building and there's work being done in the tangible world too. Trust and believe, this current way of being won't be always.
Peace & Power Great thread!

yeah I think we would be better off if we could build and sustain our own communities for a number of reasons. whether or not the community would survive past a few years is something different.

I forget it is was this year or last year, but I remember Kanye going off about how Beyonce should have won album of the year over Beck at the Grammy's. The whole time he was ranting and raving, I thought, "So why in the hell, won't you black artists start your own Grammy's? Clearly they don't want to recognize you all, so stop partipating in their stuff!" The BET Awards and the Soul Train Awards exsist, but I think the artists who have hit mainstream fame only think they are successful if they get mainstream awards.
Anyway, I say all of that to say that, even if when we have created our own, a good majority of black people feel like its inferior and won't support. Black people still walk around in Tommy Hilfiger after he came out and said that he didn't want us in his clothes, but won't buy anything out of the local black owned boutique because the price is too high!! What, bih?! We need to get out of the mindset that white people need to give us their approval or that we need to be validated by them. There is no question in my mind that we have the ability to create, my concern is if we will support our black owned businesses.

It seems like sometimes real change does not happen until there is real crisis. I would like to think that we could unify and make change before we are at the brink of disaster. I think that in the future we will get together, but I think that it will be being in a state of disaster before we will bring it all together because, yes, I think we are comfortable and passive and won't take myself out of that comfort zone.

I'm late but here's my thoughts, a lot of black people are afraid of upsetting whites, integration was one of the biggest mistakes /decision along with womens lib/feminism we ever made. We protected and sustained ourselves. I made it my business to buy from my own almost 2 years ago and have not looked back, I've been saying for years I want a huge piece of land and start building my own community . enough of us don't realize how much financial power we actually hold. Hospitals schools banks homeownership land grocery stores we had it and white people couldn't stand that we didn't need them for anything as we provided our own needs. Smh at ourselves for not believing in us as we do the white man.
