A rite of passage is a ceremony and marks the transition from one phase of life to another. Although it is often used to describe the tumultuous transition from adolescence to adulthood, it does refer to any of life's transitions (Births and Beginnings, Initiations, Partnerings, and Endings or Death). American rite of passages include "Sweet 16" and graduation ceremonies, but nothing that really says you've worked and earned you're right to be a man/woman. In fact, you're technically an a fault at 18 whether you're prepared or not. Do you feel rites of passage are important? Does your family have any rites of passages...if so what are they?
